- Apple, Inc. (AAPL $446) announced EXCELLENT sales, earnings, and margins yesterday after the close. Today however, the stock experienced modest profit taking on the gap higher in after hours trading yesterday.
- SMC Holding Cirrus Logic, Inc. (CRUS) is up firmly due to its +56% orientation of its sales to Apple, but also experienced profit taking today.
- The U.S. Federal Reserve Open Market Committee announced today that LOW Interest Rates will prevail until 2014. This is bullish for stocks. Please see below.
- Dendreon re-entered a very favorable position for possible further advance above the key $15 resistance line, on volume this morning. Please see below.
- SMC holding Boeing (BA $75.72) announced its largest order EVER from a European airline (Norwegian) AND excellent earnings. Shares recovered from a sell-off this morning.

– Market Perspectives –
For your added perspective, we’ve included this chart of the broader market (Successful stock investors develop and start with a minds-eye view of the broader market and keep it clear) –
SMC SP-500 ETF Daily Chart (Please click on the chart to see a bigger, easy to read chart on a separate browser tab window).
– Today’s Highlights –
The markets today are moving primarily in response to individual company earnings reports – such as Apple’s UPSIDE BLOW-OUT QUARTER last night, AND –
- President Obama’s State of the Union Address presented last night
- The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting minutes released today concerning monetary policy
- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s press conference
Please notice that all of these items are primarily domestic, U.S. events.
The Federal Reserve’s announcement TODAY that they intend to keep interest rates exceptionally low until 2014 is BULLISH for stocks. A portion of the large sums of cash that are now sitting in low interest cash or cash equivalent instruments will seek higher yielding (and more risky) investments (like equities).
– S.I.M.P.L.E. Stock Investingtm –
– (Where each investment begins with a Story and ends with Earnings) –
S.I.M.P.L.E. Stock Investing is built upon these core areas –
S = Story (What is / are the key catalyst(s) behind the company of interest?)
I = Investor Interest (Is the stock chart showing investor interest = buying or share accumulation?)
M = Market (Is the background market favorable for investing at this time? This recognizes that 9 out of 10 stocks move with the overall market, according to decades long research from William O’Neil.).
P = Person or Product (Is there a particular person or product that makes the story work for this investment?)
L = Leader (Is the company a leader in its industry group or is its product a leader in its market?)
E = Earnings (Are current quarterly earnings and annual earnings growing?)
Yesterday we communicated details about Apple, Inc. and our strategy on the shares, in anticipation of Apple’s quarterly earnings report after the close. Please click here for our SMC Successful Investing Video link concerning Apple.
This morning we provided a quick alert to an improving condition at Dendreon (DNDN $14.75) and as soon as possible backed this up with a SMC Successful Investing Video. Here is the video link on DNDN.
This afternoon we would like to draw your attention to the idea that President Obama announced an “all-out” “all of the above” energy policy that develops every American energy resource. In light of such a focus, we must direct our attention to publicly traded energy stocks.
Here is your link to our short video looking at several energy firms.
From these that we have reviewed today in our video, both Slumberger (SLB $75.95) and Transocean, Ltd. (RIG $47.34) appear to be the most interesting this time.

- The markets were AGAIN divergent today, just as yesterday revealing further weakness in the technology sector while the broader market (S&P 500) and the DOW (DJ-30) held POSITIVE.
- Research in Motion (Ticker: RIMM $27.75) reported earnings last night that were a major disappointment. We go through the details below. The company received 2 broker upgrades going into earnings. The stock then lost -21.45% from yesterday’s close into today. We go through our steps in handling our brief investment in the stock this last week – AND WHY, below.
- Crude oil continued to descend today, reflecting a drop in value of the U.S. dollar – BUT also concern of future demand as the global economy slows down.
- The S&P 500 is finding support at its 200 day exponential moving average. If the broader market doesn’t find strength here and begins to sink further, the next near point of support is the low it plumbed during the recent nuclear crisis in Japan. If it fails that point, then the intermediate term trend will be DOWN.
