-Executive Summary-

  • The markets were very divergent today, revealing further weakness in the technology sector while the broader market (S&P 500) and the DOW (DJ-30) held POSITIVE.
  • While the NASDAQ was negative, Stock Market Companion Watchlist stock Motorola Mobility Holdings (Ticker: MMI $24.39) moved higher as did Zagg, Inc. (Ticker: ZAGG  $12.34)
  • Pandora (IPO from yesterday, that reached $26/share at the open on its debut), closed today at $13.26.  We have mentioned frequently the importance of price discovery with IPO’s and the fact that IPO’s need time to establish at least a modest BASE from which to gauge price action.  We are interested in possible Facebook and Groupon IPO’s.  Our banker friend in Tacoma has his eye on Groupon…

– Market Perspectives –

For your added perspective, we’ve included this chart of the broader market (Successful stock investors develop and start with a minds-eye view of the broader market and keep it clear) –

1. SMC SP-500 ETF Daily Chart (Click to open helpful chart in a separate browser window).

– Today’s Highlights –

The markets started modestly positive this morning and gradually attracted buyers along the way, until an early afternoon sell-off dropped the markets to lower levels.  Last week’s initial jobless claims data encouraged some (but not us – the number is well above 400,000 initial claims and the trend is NOT down).  The fact that the markets have fallen so far so quickly and are now touching the 200 day exponential moving average is attracting buyers.  The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Banks index of business activity dropped to -7.7.  Today’s reading for June was the first negative reading for the “Philly Fed” since last September.  Click here for this insightful report direct from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank.

The broader market and DOW were able to hold positive values for the day, but not the NASDAQ.

There is increasing uncertainty of the current business economic soft patch perhaps morphing into a recession.  We reported 2 weeks ago of Australia’s negative GDP report.  More negative news – from other countries – is perhaps to come.

– Story-Stock Investing –

Our attention is drawn to both Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (MMI $24.39) and Zagg, Inc. (ZAGG $12.34) – both finishing higher for the day in the face of a negative technology market.  At the same time we are cautious of current market conditions and developments overseas (read: GREECE) that could push the markets down harder.

We will report more tomorrow.  We are currently presenting our work at the Stock Market Companion at a conference in Washington State.
