-Executive Summary-

  • Down!  The markets continue to respond to to minute-to-minute unfolding news concerning the nuclear reactor status in Japan – following last week’s terrible earthquake – as well as to violence against protesters in Bahrain and further uncertainties in the Middle East.
  • The DOW (DJ-30) was down approx. -280 points at the open but closed the downside gap throughout much of the day to close down -137.74 points.  That was impressive.
  • We are looking for opportunities among the stock sell-off, and our single SMC holding Ford Motor Co. (Ticker: F) has been – so far – a stand-out performer.
  • Today, SMC Watchlist holding Impax Labs (Ticker: IPXL) gapped higher on favorable news from its phase III testing results on its Parkinson’s drug.
  • When you can, check out this new Stock Market Companion Video Update – Make Money and Reduce Risk (3 Steps for investing successfully in a turnaround) which we posted on YouTube.  These three steps have made us a lot of money in stock investing over the years.

– Today’s Highlights –

This morning, investors had a shock.  The DOW (DJ-30) was down approx. -280 points on real radiation leakage in Japan and concerns about further meltdown at the Japanese nuclear facilities.  The Japanese equities markets are down -16% in two days.  Later in the day, further reports of shooting of protesters in Bahrain impacted the energy markets.

At the Stock Market Companion, we addressed the trouble in the markets early this morning with this SMC Intra-Day Alert –

Dear Subscriber-Friend –

The markets are strongly shaken this morning.  The DOW (DJ-30) opened at almost -300 points – as investors around the world respond in a panic to raise cash due to the rising risks of nuclear disaster in Japan.

First, let’s be clear – we are all concerned for the Japanese people and are praying for them.

Commercially, our single holding at the SMC is Ford.  At some point, our excellent entry on this stock isn’t going to matter – if the markets fall off a cliff.  But we aren’t – RIGHT NOW –  expecting this.  Ford is down this morning as we write simply 8 cents.  Few people can predict this morning to what extent Toyota is going to be impacted by this situation in Japan.  Maybe Ford is a net beneficiary?  If the market drops another 1,000 points these last two sentences will seem foolish, but at this time we are responding to the market we are seeing and experiencing right now.

If the market weakens considerably more and Ford begins to descend through $13.60/share, we will probably exit our stock.

– Story-Stock Investing –

The U.S. equities markets continue to show real resilience in the face of worldwide difficulties.  The Japanese Nikkei is down -16% in two days, including approx. -10% today.  The German – Frankfurt exchange is down -4.9%.  The U.S. DOW (DJ-30) is down -1.15%.

Our decision to remain invested in Ford Motor Co. (Ticker: F) may pay-off well.   There appears to be two ways to make money as equity investors on the current situation in the markets –

1.  See if there is an opportunity in over-sold Japanese stocks.  For instance, Toyota Motors started the month at around $94/share and this morning opened at $77/share.  The stock was purchased on weakness this morning and closed above $81/share.  Today’s activity may simply have been a passing opportunity today only.  Because we do not have any idea of the extent of difficulties in Japan, we are only interested in this strategy based on extreme weakness in stocks.

2. Find stocks that may profit from taking market share during a possible extended period of Japanese product being unavailable in the marketplace.  Ford may be a good example of this, if Toyota’s factories remain shuttered for an extended period.  The difficulty with this idea is simply the interconnectedness of the marketplace.  There are Japanese products in Ford cars.  If Ford has supply shortages resulting from Japanese sub-contractors, which cannot be bridged with other suppliers, then Ford or others will not be able to capture additional marketshare.

We are looking at Micron Technology Inc. as a beneficiary in the flash memory space due to a possible extended absence of Japanese supply and price increases in the DRAM space.

Stock Market Companion Watchlist stock Impax Laboratories (Ticker: IPXL) soared on news that its phase III level Parkinson’s drug – IPX066- met objectives.  We’re going to keep an eye on it.  Remember – Successful investors don’t chase stocks.

It may be that uranium stocks will become heavily oversold on concerns that plans for an extensive roll-out in nuclear power plants will be cancelled and slow consumption.  We want to be ready for some uranium stocks – like Cameco Corp (CCJ) – the worlds largest publicly traded uranium producer – But today’s move off the bottom may have taken the good short term profits out of this idea.  We’ll see.
