The markets put in an excellent showing in the face of a terrible situation in Japan. Our hearts go out to the millions of Japanese struggling with the aftermath of the earthquake.
– Story-Stock Investing –
We sent out this Stock Market Companion Pre-Market Alert today –
Dear Subscriber-Friend –
It’s 5:30 am here in Vancouver, WA. 1 hour ago we fired-up our computers expecting to read more about Saudi Arabia, but instead we were hit with headlines of the huge earthquake (8.9 Richter Scale) that has hit Japan. We immediately contacted our dear friend with his family in Japan and our dear friends in Hawaii – everyone is o.k. We have read that a wave of 13 feet swept along Japan’s northeast coast, causing loss of life, chaos, and tremendous damage. A few minutes ago the first tsunami wave was scheduled to hit Hawaii. The wave is expected to be approx. 6 feet. Click here for the best coverage that we could find.
The earthquake hit just before the close of the Tokyo and other Asian markets. These markets were down hard, but showed some resilience. For those seeking an end of world scenario, they aren’t going to find it here. The Japanese Nikkei market closed down only -1.8%. The Singapore market was down -3%. Click here for more details.
The pre-market futures in New York are obviously pointing down, but not at all by as much as you might expect. The SP-500 ETF (SPY) closed at 129.93 and is now reading 129.53, which is approx. 0.3 percent. That’s insignificant compared to what could be happening.
Our Stock Market Companion holding Ford Motor Co. (F) is currently priced at $13.92/share – down about 14 cents from yesterday’s close. Of course we don’t like being in the market when Saudi Arabia is possibly entering into a period of uncertainty and the largest earthquake in modern times hits Japan. But we are only in the market with a measured portion of our overall cash, since we sold our shares of Intel (INTC) on Feb. 18th at +/- 0% gains, and sold our other positions as the initial unrest in Egypt showed signs of impacting the market on Jan. 28th.
It may be wise for us to close out our Ford holding today, but there is no reason to rush for the sell button. We have picked Ford due to its
-25% price relative to its recent stock price appreciation, because the “story” is still “on” at Ford, and because the stock is at a place where prudent institutional investors often choose to purchase stocks.
It’s now 6:10 am, and 9:10 AM EST. Ford is still priced at approx. $13.92 and the SPY is 129.51.
