Yesterday’s
-Executive Summary-
- Grizzly! It’s not about Libya anymore. The Wall Street Journal reported this afternoon that police in Saudi Arabia fired rubber bullets at protestors in their eastern province. To add a bit more suspense to the entire picture, China reported its largest trade deficit in 7 years – this may be indicating that China’s own export production is quieting down a bit. Commodity based stocks all went down in value due to possible reduced demand by China. Our own jobless claims data reported today for last week were a disappointment. See more below.
- We sent out an SMC Intra-Day Alert as quickly as possible this morning describing our approach to our single SMC holding Ford Motor Co (Ticker: F $14.06). See more below.
- When you can, check out this new Stock Market Companion Video Update – Make Money and Reduce Risk (3 Steps for investing successfully in a turnaround) which we posted on YouTube. These three steps have made us a lot of money in stock investing over the years.

– Market Perspectives –
For your added perspective, we’ve included this chart of the broader market (Successful stock investors develop and start with a minds-eye view of the broader market and keep it clear) –
1. SMC SP-500 ETF Daily Chart (Click to open helpful chart in a separate browser window).
– Today’s Highlights –
China, Saudi Arabia, and our U.S. jobless claims numbers were the key catalysts for the markets set-back today.
Click here for an excellent article on the China trade deficit headline from today.
Click here for an overview of the concern in Saudi Arabia.
If trouble emerges in Saudi Arabia, you can forget about Libya. All eyes will be completely glued on Saudi Arabia – the 1000 pound gorilla which is the anchor for OPEC. Oil prices would then really go up. Today however, oil prices are decreasing as China trade numbers are leading investors to re-think how much demand there will be for raw materials if the Chinese export machine is not exporting quite as much.
– Story-Stock Investing –
The market is coming a bit unglued. During times like these we are normally on the sidelines sitting on cash, waiting for opportunistic moments to buy great stocks that go momentarily “on-sale”. We felt that way about Ford Motor Co. (F) on Monday morning and so we pulled the trigger. We sent out this SMC Intra-Day Alert concerning our Ford holdings this morning –
Dear Subscriber-Friend –
At the Stock Market Companion we are very concerned about the status of the markets this morning. The big surprise is not Libya – oil prices are down at the moment. Instead it’s the surprise that China reported its largest trade DEFICIT in 7 years AND our own US jobless claims data for last week was a disappointment.
Our single holding at the SMC is Ford. Our entry however on this stock is very good after an over -25% drop in the share price over a short period of time and with the stock resting right at its strategic 200 Day moving average.
An investor has several choices at such a time as this –
- Add-to the position (We don’t like the background market enough at this time to warrant this action)
- Sell right now. (We’re not going to do that.)
- Sell half of the position. (We’re not going to do that.)
- Raise our stop. (We’re not going to do that.)
- Hold our position and hold our stop at our original $13.40 area. (This is what we are going to do.)
While other stocks are down quite a bit more, Ford is at this time simply down 14 cents from yesterday’s close. Selling could intensify that could cause us to re-evaluate our choice from the above list.
Remember, stock investing is not an exact science. We select our entries carefully and place our stops equally carefully to maximize our chances of success. We are often right, but not always. The first loss taken is often the best one.
If we get eventually stopped out on this one, we will shake the dust off our feet and take the next well planned investment.
The DOW is now down -195 points and Ford is still holding on at $14.16.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR $61.70) landed an exclusive agreement to deliver Starbux Coffee in their K-Cup format single cup portions. This is a huge deal for GMCR. The stock is UP +41% today. We very rarely CHASE stocks at the Stock Market Companion. We wait for plateau’s to build from which to place high probability investments. GMCR needs to consolidate somewhere, at which point we will consider a prudent investment. It’s not that we don’t like being bold, we simply don’t like to be the one cashing out the early investors on their way out the door… after they dim the lights.
Special “Thanks” to subsriber “Dr. Andrew” for his sleuthing around on the Silicon Image (SIMG) Story and adding a helpful piece to the puzzle about what the HDMI interface accessory that Apple Inc. is going to sell will do for the iPad2. Here’s the key paragraph from this Finance.yahoo article –
You can now connect the iPad to a hi-def TV, thanks to a single H.D.M.I. adapter ($40) that carries both audio and hi-def video. What you see on the TV mirrors whatever is on the iPad, which makes it a great setup for teaching, slide shows, presentations, YouTube and movies. It works automatically and effortlessly.
