-Executive Summary-
- Flat to slightly higher! The markets held on – in spite of increasing oil prices. Oil closed today above $102/barrel for the first time since 2008. Gold also is soaring to a new All Time High at $1436/once.
- In sharp contrast to other times of global crisis, the U.S. Dollar is NOT attracting buyers.
- We highlight a new company – Silicon Image Inc. (Ticker: SIMG $9.69/share) that has just landed an Apple Inc. iPad debut today (surprising everyone) with its high definition electronics IC connection device. Apple will begin selling the device on March 11th. A move above $9.98/share and at least modestly stable conditions of the broader market will get us on board. See more below.
- Zagg Inc. (Ticker: ZAGG) stock was punched in the nose today, losing -23% in value when Apple Inc. unveiled its own iPad cover that’s cheaper and more functional than Zagg’s. We exited Zagg on 1/19/2011 for a +5.7% profit when selling emerged in the stock.

– Market Perspectives –
For your added perspective, we’ve included this chart of the broader market (Successful stock investors develop and start with a minds-eye view of the broader market and keep it clear) –

– Today’s Highlights –
From our in-depth perspective of over two decades involvement with the stock market, we see the events of the past month in the Arab world – beginning with Egypt and now having spread to other countries, and the markets response to these events as truly remarkable. The stock market has been very resilient. To give you an idea of how resilient the market has been, consider that oil has advanced +19% or almost $20/barrel in sudden moves and the cost of gasoline here where we live is now $3.45/gal. – yet the overall market is holding up very well – so far. The DOW (DJ-30) is still approx. 500 points above its December. 31st highs. The DOW has only given up about -325 points off its recent highs. That’s not much.
Nonetheless, there is likely more of a pull-back in store for the markets before large investors begin climbing back on board. We’ll see.
– Story-Stock Investing –
Our large cap stock ideas – Dell Inc. (Ticker: DELL), Intel Corp. (INTC), and EBAY (EBAY) each held on well today. We’re watchful. We’re keeping watch on a bunch of other ideas too.
Here’s an important one that we will purchase on a move above $9.98/share – Silicon Image Inc. (Ticker: SIMG $9.66/share). It’s close now. Today, Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPad 2. According to Briefing.com, the new iPad will have an accessory that supports HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) – which allows for the iPad to be extended onto a separate monitor.
We called the Apple store to confirm this and they are quite excited about this feature add-on because many people have complained about the lack of this functionality. This means that all applications on the iPad will now be able to be presented on a separate screen.
The developer and marketer of this technology is Silicon Image Inc. The stock moved UP +21% on this news today, but it is still selling for less than $10/share.
Silicon Image Inc. (SIMG) has just 78 million shares outstanding and a float (shares available to the public) of 73 million shares. So it can really move if institutions get behind it.
With Apple Inc. announcing its adoption of this HDMI standard for mobile devices, others manufacturers may follow.
Meanwhile, former Stock Market Companion stock holding ZAGG Inc. (Ticker: ZAGG) was crushed today for -23% as Apple revealed its own protective cover for the iPad. Remember, we exited this stock for a +5.7% profit when it began to sell off on 1/19/2011. Due to various uncertainties, upcoming earnings announcement, AND its awful performance after a debut on OPRAH! (normally a stock should do well after an endorsement on OPRAH) – we’ve simply kept our hands off ZAGG. Today the stock closed at $7.07/share.
