– Today’s Highlights –

My dear subscriber-friends, there is for me personally nothing more important today than to say “Thank You” for allowing us to serve you this year and to wish you all a blessed and happy New Year.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

(Irish Blessing)

– Story-Stock Investing –

At almost any given time in the markets, there is somewhere a market leading stock.  At the SMC we hone in on those and use them as bellwethers.  In years passed such bellwethers have been IBM, Goldman Sachs, Intel … and the list goes on.  This year bellwethers for us are Amazon.com (AMZN), Apple Inc. (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX), and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG).

As the market cruised higher two days ago on minuscule volume, our current bellwethers were showing some fray around the edges.  Some of them have have been pulling back from their highs for the last several weeks as the market has stretched higher.

These are subtle signs for us to be careful.  We will present some charts of these divergences next week.

From our SMC Watchlist, AK Steel (Ticker: AKS) is looking promising, as is Motorola (MOT).  “SHZ” – which we sold yesterday – showed some resilience today and closed above $8.00/share.  If it continues to show promise we will carefully consider re-establishing a position there.  It is wise to have at the back of our minds that SHZ was priced at $1/share in early October.  Ford Motor Co. (F) also continues to build a nice, tight lateral consolidation at around $16.80/share.
